I've sweated my way through five summers in the Midwest, and I have to admit, I'm not always prepared when it comes to my wardrobe. However, this year I'm making sure that changes.
Rather than playing a long and complicated guessing game, I consulted three top fashion stylists to find out the staples they insist their clients keep in their closets for summer, as well as the essentials they reach for themselves. Better yet, I wanted to explore more affordable options that I could shop at Amazon, and they didn't disappoint.
Wide-Leg Linen Pants
"Linen wide-leg pants are the definition of effortless summer style," Shari Braendel, founder and CEO of Style by Color, tells us. The fact that they're flowy and breathable "while looking polished," makes them a non-negotiable addition to an easy warm-weather wardrobe. Consider them a more elevated alternative to your standard shorts or denim, and they'll work for multiple occasions this season as well.
Effortless White Tank
Braendel also says that a sleek white tank top is "basically everything you need when the heat hits." This simple yet versatile piece will be a little "chameleon" of style in your closet. There are just so many ways to dress it up or down for just about any social event. "You can knot it, tuck it, or leave it loose," she suggests. The options are truly endless, and with this multi-pack, you'll have four of these on hand.
Maxi Dress
Personal stylist Dianne Boyer says that if you're going to keep a no-fuss dress in your rotation, go for a maxi style. Not only does it work for summer, but you can also style it year-round by changing up accessories and adding some outerwear once it gets cooler again. "While I will wear black and white most of the time, I prefer navy in the summer," she shares.
White Denim
You should also focus on keeping your denim light. "White denim is always a summer staple, and for this season, I recommend going with a wide-leg style for a modern feel," Boyer adds. Thanks to this flexible neutral shade, the styling possibilities are endless, and they really only depend on the vibe you're going for. Plus, you can team them with sneakers, flats, heels, or sandals.
Oversized Button-Downc
Boyer also recommends a lightweight, oversized button-down. She specifically prefers this design because of the flocked sleeves, which "keep the shirt neat-looking, and because of the trending butter yellow color." The striped design also coincides with the rise of the nautical look. Pair it with your sailor jeans for the ultimate style duo.
White Platform Sneakers
Don't just go for any sneaker; a white platform style lends you "extra height" while "elongating the legs," according to Boyer. Whether you wear them with cut-off shorts or your favorite dress, they'll give a casual touch to your look while still making you feel polished. Plus, as a 5-foot-1 woman, I prefer a little boost that doesn't always involve heels.
Raffia Sandal
Style coach Liz Wendler insists that a mesh or raffia sandal "is an absolute must to add to your summer wardrobe." The "breezy" style looks so elegant while remaining cool and comfortable for any warm-weather events. They also scream "quiet luxury" while remaining "light, tactile, and just undone enough to make everything else feel effortless."
Striped Dress
"A striped dress is summer’s version of a good mood you can wear," Wendler says. The striped motif makes it feel a bit more elevated compared to a solid hue, and we also can't resist a dress with pockets. It's the kind of piece that works just as well for running errands as it will for Sunday brunch.
Straw Bag
You can't forget to add some fresh and fun accessories into the mix. Wendler loves giving a basic outfit a boost with a classic and simple straw bag. "It instantly brightens up an outfit and brings an airy feel to your wardrobe," she notes. Even better, the neutral tone will help it work well with so many pieces that are already hanging in your closet.
White Linen Shirt
"The white linen shirt is less of a trend and more of a summer state of mind," Wendler shares. A crisp white shirt is a workwear essential, and in a lightweight linen material, you'll get through a heatwave easily. You can tuck this style into a nice pair of trousers or shorts, and you can even use it to dress up your swimwear by the pool or at the beach.
Having lightweight-yet-stylish pieces in your closet is essential for the summer heat. If your wardrobe is lacking in that area, don’t worry; you don’t have to spend your entire beach vacation budget to buy some new items. Amazon has so many options to wear to work, to brunch, and everywhere else for under $30. Below you’ll find cute blouses, tanks, and T-shirts, starting at just $8.
Dokotoo Floral-Print Puff-Sleeve Shirt
This adorable puff-sleeve blouse has ruffles along the sleeve hem and a small keyhole detail in back. The delicate floral print comes in a variety of colors, including light pink, lavender, yellow, pale green, and more summery shades. “I ordered this blouse to freshen up my spring wardrobe, and it has quickly become one of my go-to teaching outfits,” said one shopper. “The puff sleeves and smocked details add a stylish touch while still keeping it professional and classroom-appropriate. It’s flowy and lightweight, making it super comfortable for busy school days.”
Floerns Ruffle-Sleeve Blouse
Pair this sleeveless blouse with trousers or a slip skirt for the ideal summer office outfit. Thanks to the ruffled cap sleeves and notched neckline, the top looks much more polished than a typical tank, but it will still keep you cool. According to reviewers, the lightweight material is breathable yet not see through.
Blooming Jelly Flutter-Sleeve Blouse
Instead of a basic crewneck tee, reach for this elevated version. The ruffled sleeves and faux-pleating detail give the top a dressier look that’s great for almost any summer occasion. Plus, the flowy fit and stretchy fabric will keep you comfy. Choose from 20 different colors, including black, navy, hot pink, sky blue, turquoise, and more.

I’ve been slowly but surely building my summer wardrobe over the last several weeks. However, I’m still on the hunt for a few more staples to round out my rotation. Target is always my go-to destination for affordable yet elevated pieces, but, as a 5-foot-tall gal, it takes some digging to find styles that are reliably petite-friendly, especially while shopping online.
I sifted through all of Target’s new fashion arrivals and loaded my cart with linen pants, sundresses, and breezy skirts that come short-shopper-approved. Even better? All of my versatile picks are priced safely below $40, so they’ll quickly pay for themselves in cost-per-wear. Below, shop nine petite summer staples I’m eyeing at Target, starting from $20.
Wild Fable Pull-On Linen Pants
Linen pants are a non-negotiable for me in the summer because they’re lightweight in the heat, warm in the rain, and can easily be dressed up for work or date nights. This $25 pair from Wild Fable features an easy pull-on design, with a drawstring waistband, side pockets, and a universally flattering wide-leg silhouette. Two 5’3” shoppers said they “had no issue with length” while wearing the style with flats, and another 5’3” fan said they make for “the perfect summer pants.” Plus, after a two-hour car ride, they “still looked good” with minimal wrinkles.
Universal Thread Rib-Knit Maxi Bodycon Dress
Warm weather dressing is all about ease and comfort, so I can already tell this “super flattering” maxi bodycon dress, per reviews, will prove essential in my rotation. It’s available in two striped and four solid color options and has a modest side slit, stretchy rib fabrication, and sleeveless high neckline, which offers a casual yet chic canvas for dressing up or down, depending on the occasion. And don’t be scared by the maxi hem—a 4’11” reviewer said it “does not touch the floor,” while one who’s 5’2” raved it’s “the best $20 spent!”
Wild Fable Linen Side-Tie Wrap Skort
My love for skorts knows no bounds because they’re the perfect balance between function and fashion thanks to built-in shorts. This linen side-tie wrap design is so cute and impressively affordable, and you can grab the matching linen top to create a complete, vacay-ready outfit. I’m planning on pairing it with simple white tanks, breezy blouses, and more summer tops.
A New Day Maxi Picnic A-Line Skirt
Consider a white midi skirt the summer version of staple blue jeans—it goes with virtually everything, with effortless comfort to boot. This style has a cotton blend seersucker fabrication, so you won’t have to worry about wrinkles while traveling, plus a comfy elastic waistband and handy side pockets. A 5’4” shopper said it “fits perfectly,” adding that the white color option is fully lined, while others agree the material is “lightweight” and ideal for beating the heat.

Whether you just recently started going back into the office or you’ve been going in for ages, comfortable work clothes are a must. No one wants to be stuck in stiff or too-tight pants when you’re sitting for about eight hours a day. This pair looks nice enough to feel formal, but they’re actually super comfy, according to shoppers. One person said, “They are buttery soft, fit amazing[ly], look professional, and feel like you’re wearing pajamas.” Snag the trousers for $20 at Amazon.
Made of a polyester and spandex blend, the pants deliver four-way stretch to move with you on your commute or as you walk through the office. The bootcut design is roomy enough to be comfortable without looking sloppy, too. Thanks to the pull-on elastic waistband, you also don’t have to worry about a tight waist, buttons, or zippers digging into your stomach (the pants do have a faux fly, so they don’t look like yoga pants).
Dlooda Bootcut Trousers
You can choose from 16 mostly neutral colors, including black, khaki, taupe, and gray, that will go with anything in your closet. Style the trousers with a bright blouse for a touch of color, or go for a sophisticated monochromatic look. The versatile pants are easy to dress up or down, too. They’ll be the perfect elevated casual look with sneakers, yet they’ll pair just as well with heels and a blazer.
“These bootcut dress pants are everything I’ve ever wanted in workwear and then some!” one shopper raved. “The fit is absolutely perfect: flattering, comfortable, and professional enough to strut into any meeting like I own the place.” They added that the pants are so comfy, they feel custom-made.
Another shopper said, “They are like yoga pants or leggings with a professional look. I wore these to a work conference, and I was so comfortable the whole day. As someone who works remotely most of the time, pants like these were so nice for needing to wear business casual clothes for the first time in a while.”

From boat shoes to Nantucket reds, New Englanders are known for their summer style—I would know, since I go to Cape Cod and Maine every summer. Even if you’re not planning a trip to Bar Harbor or Martha’s Vineyard this year, you can still dress like you are. I found a bunch of breezy dresses, cute sandals, canvas tote bags, and more to help you get the look—including a lobster sweater.
Vigoss Lobster Pullover Sweater
What could be more New England than a lobster sweater? This cotton-blend knit pullover has a crewneck and a roomy fit that’s perfect for throwing over a tee when you get cold at night. And when the temperatures start to dip in the fall, you can wear the sweater with jeans and sneakers for a casual look.
Sperry Bluefish 2-Eye Boat Shoe
Boat shoes are a New England staple. These Sperry boat shoes are made of water-resistant leather with mesh panels for breathability, and they have a nonslip rubber sole to prevent slipping. You’ll stay comfy all day with the memory foam footbed and the adjustable laces that allow you to customize the fit.
The Drop Kimi Ruffled-Shoulder Smocked Midi Dress
Pair this floral dress with comfortable sneakers for an outdoor brunch, or wear it with cute sandals and a cardigan for an evening out. The 100 percent cotton midi dress has a stretchy smocked bodice and flowy skirt that will keep you cool. The ruffles on the straps and hem add a fun, feminine touch, too.
Lands’ End Medium Natural 5-Pocket Open Top Canvas Tote Bag
A canvas tote bag is a must for a beach day down the Cape. You can totally customize this tote to your liking, with 21 colors, four sizes, two handle lengths, and open- and zip-top options. The bag has both exterior and interior slip pockets and a key ring attachment. It’s super durable—it’s tested to hold up to 250 pounds, which means you can toss your beach towel, sunscreen, water bottle, book, and whatever else you want inside.

Strapless bras are notorious for being uncomfortable and not staying in place, but sometimes they’re necessary. Especially with summer wedding season coming up, having a quality strapless bra will definitely come in handy for dresses with thin or no straps. And we found one that more than 17,570 five-star reviewers approve of—even shoppers with large chests. Right now, the Vanity Fair strapless bra is up to 64 percent off. Grab it for just $19 at Amazon.
The bra’s band has strips of silicone to help stop it from sliding down. One customer said, “I've worn this all night at multiple weddings now, and not only is it comfortable all night, [but] the fit [also] does not change. You won't have to worry about it slipping down or twisting. It's magic.” With lightly lined cups, the bra provides coverage without feeling overly padded, which large-chested shoppers appreciate.
Vanity Fair Back-Smoothing Strapless Bra
Made of nylon, polyester, and spandex, the bra’s fabric stretches with you to avoid back and side bulges, and the underwire and boning prevent spillage. You can also wear the strapless style as a typical bra with the removable straps. The straps can be converted to be halter, criss-cross, or one-shoulder to go with many different tops and dresses, too.
Even shoppers with large busts rave about the bra. One five-star reviewer commented, “This is the best strapless bra ever! I am a 34DD, so for me, it’s important to find a comfortable but sturdy strapless bra so that the girls stay put. I ordered it a little over a year ago, and I still wear it to this day! It fits perfectly and does not slide down or move at all. It does not dig into your skin or hurt. It is very flattering, and there is no spillage.”
Another person who wears a size 36DD said they haven’t owned a strapless bra in 34 years because they don’t stay up—until they found this Vanity Fair option. “[This bra] fits great. No spillage, amazing support, and no adjusting needed throughout the day…Next summer, you better believe I’m going to be finally shopping for strapless dresses!”

The great shift toward maximalism and self-expression (a sharp departure from quiet luxury) continues right into the hot season. This summer’s top swimsuit trends take a “more is more” approach, leveraging texture, patterns, color, and embellishments, so consider this your sign to set the simple black suit aside (at least for now) and toss something more showy into your beach bag. Ahead, a personal stylist and swimwear designer dish on all the biggest trends to help you narrow down your swimsuit choices.

Floral Prints and Appliqués
Florals are a big yes when it comes to summer swimsuit trends, and they’re showing up via everything from subtle 3D appliques to splashy tropical prints, says Dianne Boyer, a certified personal stylist and founder of Dianne In Style. “Details like floral appliques are a way to add a stylish detail to a piece that has a typically expected look, and bright, stunning prints send the same message,” she says. “This is a look you can have fun picking unique color combinations for your personal style.”

Bright and Bold
Speaking of splashy tropical prints, you can expect lots of bright and bold swimwear in 2025. “Shoppers are choosing expressive, feel-good swimwear,” says Githa Duncker, co-founder and creative director of swimwear brand AQUARI. “It's about investing in pieces that spark joy and stand the test of time, so choose colors and prints that reflect you, not just trends.”
03
of 08
Boho Aesthetic
Boho is back in a big way, but with more of an elevated swist. “Think modern silhouettes with vintage-inspired prints, hand-dyed fabrics, crochet details, and nature-inspired color palettes,” Duncker tells us. “The great thing about this trend is that it pairs beautifully with brands that prioritize slow fashion and traditional techniques, creating pieces that are as soulful as they are stylish.” To nail the aesthetic, she suggests keeping the look light and airy. For example, layer your bikini with a sheer cover-up or a textured button-down dress.
04

One-Shoulder Swimsuits
The asymmetrical trend for the season spills into swimwear for both one-piece and two-piece styles. “Look for fun details such as shoulder bow details, ruffles, and fun prints,” Boyer suggests. She adds,“Stripes on an asymmetrical cut can be flattering as they create curves compared to horizontal stripes. Color blocking, also in style this season, is a unique and fun look for a one-shoulder one-piece swimsuit.”
05
of 08
Vintage Vibes
Along with boho, a trend that was everywhere in the ‘60s and ‘70s, we’re seeing vintage vibes inspired by colors, prints, and silhouettes from the ‘50s. “With the return of gingham and polka dots this season, we see those patterns woven into vintage-style swimwear,” Boyer says.“Because of their vintage nature, styles are being aligned to match the patterns. Vintage-style bottoms are often high-waisted with full coverage.”

Sustainability
The tie between our oceans and sustainability is close, and in 2025 we’re seeing a continuation of brands focusing on ways to be kinder to our planet. “From protecting the ocean to supporting local makers, to using upcycled materials in creative ways,” Duncker says. “Shoppers are gravitating toward labels that are transparent, thoughtful, and stand for something bigger than trends.”

Metallic Finishes
If you like the concept of more is more but don’t want to veer into ultra-colorful prints and loud details, then metallic is the way to go. Whether you’re going for the itty bitty bikini or a shimmering one-piece, these light-reflecting fabrics capture the right amount of attention while showcasing a bit of personality.

Embellishments & Hardware
Adding bling to simple pieces is a huge 2025 summer swimsuit trend. This is showing up via embellished straps (think frills, pearls, or studs) and hardware details at the bust, hips, back, or along the sides. Boyer says these details add just enough pizzazz to an otherwise simple suit without taking away from its wearability.
For me, the worst part of wedding season is planning my petite-friendly outfits around uncomfortably warm weather. I swear I'm already sweating just thinking about it. Invitations started pouring in months ago, and I’ve been left with a full roster of weddings coming up this spring and summer.
Along with some cool wedding nail ideas, I also plotted out a few key looks to fit the different types of weddings I'll be attending, and their accompanying dress codes. It was important to keep in mind that I'm 5-foot-1, and don’t want to be swallowed up by a gown. I also prioritized breathable fabrics that I won’t overheat in.
I'm pretty proud of my lineup. Best of all, I'll get more than one wear out of these beautiful styles by dressing them down with different accessories for more casual occasions.
J.Crew Linen Mini Dress
Linen is a must in the summer. I know I'll be glad I went this route when I don J.Crew’s lightweight linen dress at an upcoming outdoor wedding. My favorite thing about it is how the skirt flutters gracefully around the legs. The front reminds me of a dressy vest, which pairs stunningly with the eye-catching green hue—though this is available in three other, more neutral, hues, as well.
The Occasion by Old Navy Fit & Flare Taffeta Mini Dress
I had no idea Old Navy had a “special occasion” section, but the brand really outdid itself with this darling flora piece. I love wearing green, and the large floral print on this option enhances its elegant silhouette. The full skirt and bow straps add a romantic touch that's ideal for an indoor ceremony and reception. I’ll pair it with raffia Mary Jane flats to complete the look.
Lulus Sweet At Heart Blue Floral Embroidered Two-Piece
Fine. It's not technically a dress, but it's the next best thing, and is adorned in thoughtfully embroidered florals. I plan on wearing this to a friend's backyard wedding and reception. It shows off just a sliver of skin, but since I have a short torso, the top doesn’t look very revealing on me at all.
Free People Free-Est Coastal Classy Set
Another set I was especially excited about, this looks so effortlessly sophisticated. It will be my outfit for a family member's small at-home ceremony. In this gorgeous two-piece, I'll be comfortable without feeling over- or underdressed. I already know I’ll wear this out on date nights and to alfresco dinner parties, too.
Astr the Label Bow Back A-Line Dress
I have so many Astr the Label dresses in my closet—the brand nails the feminine chic vibe like nobody's business. The sultry slide slit on this dress’s midi-length skirt, soft fit-and-flare shape, square neckline, and open back with sweet bows come together in a polished combination. I honestly can't wait to whip this number out! I plan to restyle it for a couple of upcoming banquets, too.
